| 25 November 2010 Treasurer Wayne Swan strongly urges all Australians to ‘dump the banks’ and consider a credit union or building society. On Sunday, 21 November 2010, Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan announced to the Nation his trust and full support of Australian credit unions and building societies. "They are safe and very competitive and they are supervised in the same way that banks are supervised and of course you can get a far better deal." "You go to a credit union, you may be able to get up to 100 basis points better in terms of your mortgage” This announcement came in response to the recent debate regarding competition within the Australian banking industry.
